Can cats eat raspberries?

verdictA little

A little. Raspberries aren't toxic to cats: two or three berries once in a while, no more.

Why?

Raspberries aren't toxic, but they're high in fiber and contain sugar a carnivore doesn't need. They also naturally contain a tiny amount of xylitol: not a problem in a few berries, but one more reason not to overdo it. Too many can cause diarrhea.

How much?

Two or three fresh, washed raspberries now and then is enough. Cut them in half for a small cat, and skip jam, coulis and desserts.

The risks

  • Diarrhea or vomiting from too many berries
  • Extra sugar for diabetic cats
  • Jam and coulis: very sugary
  • Desserts or sugar-free products sometimes sweetened with xylitol

Your cat ate some: what now?

A few raspberries are not dangerous. Watch for stomach upset over the next 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if your cat ate a large amount, got into a sugar-free product containing xylitol, or shows symptoms.

Better options

For a treat made for your cat, a small piece of plain cooked turkey or chicken is ideal. If you want fruit, blueberries are a little easier to portion.

Common questions

Can cats eat raspberry jam?

No, it's mostly sugar, and some reduced-sugar versions contain sweeteners. A fresh berry is the only option.

What about blackberries?

Same rules as raspberries: they aren't toxic, and a few plain berries now and then are fine.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
