Can cats eat jam?

verdictA little

A little. A tiny lick of regular jam isn't dangerous, but it's mostly sugar, and some jams should be avoided entirely.

Why?

Jam is often more than half sugar, which is useless for a carnivore that can't taste sweetness. Light or sugar-free versions may contain sweeteners like xylitol, which should be avoided. Grape jelly and citrus marmalade are a problem because of the fruit itself: grapes and citrus aren't recommended for cats. Berry jams like strawberry aren't toxic.

How much?

A lick from the corner of your toast, once in a while, and only regular jam (strawberry, raspberry). Never sugar-free, grape or citrus.

The risks

  • Diarrhea or vomiting if too much is eaten
  • Possible xylitol in sugar-free jam
  • Grape jelly: avoided as a precaution
  • Digestive irritation from citrus marmalade
  • Weight gain if it happens often

Your cat ate some: what now?

A small amount of regular jam is usually not a problem: watch your cat for 24 to 48 hours for vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy. Call your vet if those signs appear, if your cat ate a lot, or right away if the jam was sugar-free or made from grapes.

Better options

If you want to share fruit, a few small pieces of fresh strawberry are enough. Otherwise, a cat treat will please your cat more.

Common questions

Can cats eat grape jelly?

Better not. Grapes have been linked to kidney damage in dogs and the risk for cats isn't well understood, so grape products are avoided as a precaution.

Can cats eat strawberry jam?

A tiny lick of regular strawberry jam won't harm your cat, but it's mostly sugar. A small piece of fresh strawberry is a better way to share.
