Why?
There's nothing toxic in strawberries, but they contain sugar and fiber your cat doesn't really use. Cats can't even taste sweetness, so interest in a strawberry is mostly curiosity. Too much can upset their stomach.
How much?
Half a strawberry cut into small pieces, once in a while, is plenty. Wash it well, remove the stem and leaves, and skip sugared or cream-topped strawberries.
The risks
- Diarrhea or vomiting from too much fruit
- Extra sugar for diabetic or overweight cats
- Choking if given whole
- Strawberry desserts: lactose, sugar, sweeteners
Your cat ate some: what now?
A few stolen strawberries are not dangerous. Watch for vomiting or diarrhea over the next 24 to 48 hours. If your cat ate a whole carton or symptoms persist, call your vet.
Better options
For a treat that really suits your cat, go for a small piece of plain cooked chicken or a cat treat. If you want to stick with fruit, a couple of blueberries work too.
Common questions
Are strawberry leaves safe for cats?
The strawberry plant isn't considered toxic to cats. Chewing a leaf may cause mild stomach upset at worst.
Can cats eat strawberry yogurt or ice cream?
No. These desserts are sugary, contain lactose and sometimes sweeteners such as xylitol. A plain piece of strawberry is the way to share.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
