Can cats eat olives?

verdictA little

A little. A plain pitted olive isn't toxic to cats, but it's very salty: a small piece now and then, no more.

Why?

Olives aren't toxic, but store-bought ones are cured in brine and very salty: too much salt can make your cat drink a lot, vomit or, in large amounts, become poisoned. The pit can cause choking or get stuck in the gut. Stuffed or marinated olives often contain garlic, cheese or spices that don't suit cats.

How much?

A small piece of pitted olive, rinsed in water, once in a while is enough. Never stuffed olives, garlic or herb olives, or tapenade.

The risks

  • Too much salt: intense thirst, vomiting
  • Pit: choking or blockage
  • Stuffed or marinated olives: garlic, cheese, chili
  • Diarrhea from too much oil

Your cat ate some: what now?

A stolen olive is usually nothing serious. Watch for excessive thirst, vomiting or diarrhea over the next 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if your cat swallowed a pit, ate several olives or garlic-marinated ones, or if those signs appear.

Better options

If your cat goes wild for olives, catnip or a catnip toy gives a similar thrill without the salt. As a treat, a small piece of plain cooked chicken is perfect.

Common questions

Why do cats love olives?

Some cats react to olives a bit like they do to catnip. One theory is that certain olive compounds resemble those in catnip, but it isn't proven. It's not a reason to give them often.

A drop in the bowl is no problem. Too much, and you'll get diarrhea.
