Can cats eat catnip?

verdictYes

Yes. Catnip is safe for cats: they can sniff it, chew it and roll in it, and the worst that happens from eating a lot is a mild upset stomach.

Why?

Catnip contains nepetalactone, a compound that triggers a short burst of euphoria in many cats: rolling, rubbing, purring, then a calm phase. Not every cat responds, since sensitivity is partly inherited, and kittens rarely react before they're a few months old. It isn't addictive and isn't considered toxic.

How much?

Your cat can chew fresh catnip in moderation; a few nibbles a day is plenty. For dried catnip, a pinch on a toy or scratcher a few times a week keeps the effect strong.

The risks

  • Vomiting if a lot is eaten at once
  • Mild, short-lived diarrhea
  • Overexcitement or brief swatting in some cats
  • Mold on overwatered pots

Your cat ate some: what now?

Even a large amount of catnip isn't toxic: at worst, your cat may vomit or have mild diarrhea. Watch them for 24 to 48 hours, and call your vet if vomiting keeps happening.

Better options

Silver vine (matatabi) or valerian root can trigger a similar reaction in some cats that ignore catnip. Cat grass and spider plants are also safe for nibbling.

Common questions

Can cats eat catnip every day?

Yes, it's not harmful. Spacing out sessions helps keep the effect strong, since cats can become less responsive with constant exposure.

Is cat grass the same as catnip?

No. Cat grass is usually young wheat, oat or barley sprouts that cats like to chew, while catnip is a mint-family herb that triggers that playful reaction. Both are safe.
