Can cats eat avocado?

verdictNo

No. Avocado is very fatty, and its pit, skin and leaves contain persin: best avoided entirely.

Why?

Persin, found mainly in the pit, skin and leaves, is highly toxic to some animals such as birds, and in cats it mostly causes vomiting and diarrhea. The flesh is very fatty and can also trigger stomach upset or even pancreatitis. And the big pit can cause choking or block the gut.

How much?

No amount is recommended, guacamole included. Throw pits and skins away in a closed trash can.

The risks

  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Pancreatitis from the fat
  • Pit: choking or blockage
  • Guacamole: onion and garlic, both toxic

Your cat ate some: what now?

If your cat swallowed a piece of pit or skin, or ate guacamole, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms. Don't try to make your cat vomit yourself. If your cat only licked a little flesh, watch for vomiting, diarrhea or belly pain over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Better options

If you want to give your cat healthy fats, a small piece of plain cooked salmon is a much better fit. For a simple treat, a bit of cooked chicken works well.

Common questions

What about guacamole?

Even worse: on top of the avocado, it usually contains onion and garlic, which damage a cat's red blood cells. If your cat ate some, call your vet.

Why is avocado in some cat foods?

Some manufacturers use processed avocado flesh or oil, without the pit, skin or leaves. That doesn't mean fresh avocado from your kitchen is suitable.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
