Why?
Kiwi flesh isn't toxic, but it's acidic, sugary and contains an enzyme called actinidin that can irritate the mouth and stomach. Kiwi also contains oxalates, which aren't recommended for cats prone to urinary stones. The fuzzy skin is hard to digest.
How much?
One or two small cubes of ripe flesh once in a while is enough. Peel the kiwi, cut it small, and skip it entirely if your cat has urinary issues.
The risks
- Mouth or stomach irritation
- Diarrhea from too much fruit
- Oxalates: not for cats with urinary stones
- Fuzzy skin is hard to digest
Your cat ate some: what now?
A bite of kiwi isn't dangerous. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, drooling or pawing at the mouth over the next 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if those signs appear or if your cat ate a whole kiwi, skin and all.
Better options
A cat treat or a small piece of plain cooked chicken will suit your cat much better. And if your cat wants to chew on plants, cat grass is the way to go.
Common questions
Is silver vine related to kiwi?
Yes, silver vine belongs to the same plant genus as kiwi. It's the dried stems and fruit of silver vine that excite many cats, a bit like catnip, not the kiwi you eat.
Can cats eat kiwi skin?
It isn't toxic, but it's fuzzy, fibrous and hard to digest. Always peel the kiwi before sharing.
