Can cats eat green beans?

verdictYes

Yes. Green beans are safe for cats: boiled or steamed, unsalted and cut into short pieces, they make a light treat.

Why?

Green beans are low in calories and rich in fiber and water. Cooked, they're tender and easy to digest, and a few pieces added to the bowl can help a cat on a diet feel full, with your vet's approval. Raw, they're tougher and contain lectins, proteins that can irritate the gut; cooking deactivates them.

How much?

A few pieces of boiled or steamed green beans, plain, once in a while. Canned green beans are often salted, so pick no-salt-added ones or rinse them well.

The risks

  • Gas or soft stools if your cat eats too many
  • Raw beans, which are tougher and harder on the gut
  • Salted canned beans or beans sauteed with garlic
  • A long bean swallowed whole, which can cause choking

Your cat ate some: what now?

A few green beans are nothing to worry about. If your cat ate a lot, or ate them raw, watch it for 24 to 48 hours and call your vet if vomiting or diarrhea doesn't settle. If they were cooked with garlic or onion, call your vet right away.

Better options

Peas, zucchini and cooked carrot are also well tolerated. If your cat needs to lose weight, ask your vet for a proper plan rather than filling the bowl with veggies.

Common questions

Can green beans help my cat lose weight?

They can bulk up a meal with few calories, but they don't replace a vet-designed diet. Cats that lose weight too fast can develop a serious liver disease called hepatic lipidosis, so work with your vet.

Can cats eat canned green beans?

Yes, if they're plain with no added salt; otherwise, rinse them well. Skip green bean casserole, which comes with fried onions and a rich, salty sauce.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
