Can cats eat broccoli?

verdictYes

Yes. Broccoli is safe for cats: steamed, plain and in small amounts, it can be an occasional treat.

Why?

Broccoli, part of the cabbage family, provides fiber and antioxidants, but cats don't need it to be healthy. Like other cruciferous veggies, it ferments in the gut and can cause gas if the portion is too big. Raw, it's hard and tougher to digest; steaming softens it.

How much?

One or two small florets, steamed and cut up, once in a while. No butter, salt, cheese or sauce.

The risks

  • Gas and bloating
  • Diarrhea if the portion is too big
  • Hard raw stalks that are difficult to chew
  • Cheesy casseroles and sauces, too fatty and salty

Your cat ate some: what now?

A bit of broccoli won't hurt your cat. A larger amount may cause gas or soft stools, so watch it for 24 to 48 hours and call your vet if vomiting or diarrhea keeps going.

Better options

Cooked cauliflower, green beans or zucchini are also well tolerated. And if your cat mostly likes chewing on greens, cat grass is made for that.

Common questions

Why does my cat love broccoli?

Some cats enjoy the texture and nibble the florets a bit like grass. As long as it's a small, cooked amount, it's fine to let them enjoy it.

Can cats eat raw broccoli?

It isn't toxic, but it's harder and tougher to digest. Steaming it and cutting it into small pieces is the better option.
