Can cats eat zucchini?

verdictYes

Yes. Zucchini isn't toxic to cats: raw or cooked, plain and cut small, it makes a fine occasional snack.

Why?

Zucchini is a summer squash, related to cucumber and pumpkin. It's mostly water, low in calories, with gentle fiber that's easy to digest once cooked. It lacks what cats truly need, like animal protein and taurine, so it stays an extra. One caveat: if a zucchini tastes very bitter, toss it, since bitterness signals high levels of cucurbitacins, which irritate the gut.

How much?

A teaspoon of steamed or boiled zucchini, or a few small raw cubes, once in a while. No oil or salt, and skip ratatouille or casseroles, which usually contain garlic, onion or cheese.

The risks

  • Soft stools or diarrhea if the portion is too big
  • Stomach upset from a very bitter zucchini (cucurbitacins)
  • Garlic and onion hidden in stir-fries and ratatouille
  • Large raw pieces that are hard to chew

Your cat ate some: what now?

A bit of plain zucchini is no problem. If your cat ate a lot, keep an eye on its stools for 24 to 48 hours and call your vet if vomiting or diarrhea keeps going. If it ate a dish cooked with garlic or onion, call your vet right away.

Better options

Cucumber, cooked pumpkin and green beans are other gentle veggies cats tolerate well. For a real reward, a bite of cooked turkey will go over better.

Common questions

Can cats eat raw zucchini?

Yes, in small, well-washed cubes. Cooked zucchini is just softer and easier to digest.

Can cats eat zucchini bread?

It's not a good idea. Zucchini bread is full of sugar and fat and may contain raisins, nuts or nutmeg, which are risky for cats. Plain zucchini is the safe way to share.
