Can cats eat mint?

verdictA little

A little. A nibbled mint leaf usually isn't serious, but the plant can upset a cat's stomach and peppermint oil is toxic to cats.

Why?

Mint contains essential oils, including menthol, that irritate a cat's digestive tract: eating a lot of it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. That's why it appears on some lists of plants toxic to cats, even though a single leaf rarely causes trouble. The real danger is concentrated products: a cat's liver handles many essential oil compounds poorly, and mint candy or gum may contain xylitol.

How much?

There's no need to offer it. If your cat nibbles your mint plant now and then, it's not a big deal, but move the pot out of reach if they keep going back.

The risks

  • Vomiting and diarrhea if a lot is eaten
  • Essential oil: drooling, tremors, liver damage
  • Mint candy and gum: xylitol and choking
  • Mouth irritation

Your cat ate some: what now?

A leaf or two of mint usually causes no problem: watch for vomiting or diarrhea for 24 to 48 hours. If your cat licked essential oil, swallowed a mint candy or gum, or ate a large amount of the plant, call your vet right away.

Better options

Offer catnip instead: it's a cousin of mint your cat can chew and sniff safely. A pot of cat grass is ideal too.

Common questions

Is catnip a type of mint?

Catnip belongs to the mint family, but it's not the mint you cook with. Catnip is safe for cats, while garden mint can upset their stomach.

Is peppermint oil safe to diffuse around cats?

It's best to avoid it. Cats are very sensitive to essential oils, whether they breathe them in or lick them off their fur, and peppermint is one of them. Ask your vet before using any diffuser.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
