Is aloe vera safe for cats?

verdictNo

No. Aloe vera is toxic to cats: the yellow latex just under the skin of the leaves causes vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy if they chew the plant.

Why?

Just beneath the leaf skin, aloe vera holds a yellow latex rich in anthraquinones (such as aloin) and saponins, which are strongly laxative and irritating. Chewing it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy, and more rarely tremors or a change in urine color. The clear inner gel is less of a problem, but it's hard to separate it completely from the latex.

How much?

No amount is recommended. Keep the plant out of reach, and don't apply aloe gel anywhere your cat can lick without asking your vet.

The risks

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea, sometimes severe
  • Lethargy and loss of appetite
  • More rarely, tremors or abnormal urine color

Your cat ate some: what now?

Call your vet or an animal poison control center without waiting for symptoms, and tell them how much your cat chewed. Bring the plant or the product packaging, and don't try to make your cat vomit.

Better options

For an easy, cat-safe houseplant, choose a spider plant, a parlor palm or a non-toxic succulent like haworthia. And offer a pot of cat grass to chew.

Common questions

Is aloe vera gel safe for cats?

Pure gel is less irritating than the latex, but store-bought gels often contain additives, and your cat will lick whatever you apply. Don't put it on their skin without your vet's okay.

Can I keep an aloe plant if I have a cat?

Yes, if it's truly out of reach, for example in a room your cat doesn't enter. If your cat climbs everywhere, swap it for a cat-safe plant.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
