Is poinsettia safe for cats?

verdictA little

A little. Poinsettias irritate cats, but they're far less toxic than their reputation: they mostly cause drooling and mild vomiting.

Why?

The milky sap of the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) contains substances that irritate the mouth, stomach and skin. Chewing it most often causes drooling and mild vomiting or diarrhea, which usually pass without treatment. Its reputation as a deadly plant is overblown, but that's no reason to let your cat snack on it.

How much?

Your cat shouldn't eat any, but you can keep one out of reach, on a high shelf or in a room your cat doesn't use. Pick up fallen leaves.

The risks

  • Drooling
  • Mild vomiting or diarrhea
  • Mouth irritation
  • Redness or itching if the sap touches skin or eyes

Your cat ate some: what now?

A few bites of poinsettia usually cause mild signs that go away on their own: offer fresh water and watch your cat for 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if vomiting keeps happening, if your cat won't eat or drink, or if they ate a large amount.

Better options

For a festive touch, Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) is considered non-toxic to cats. Artificial flowers are another good option.

Common questions

Are poinsettias deadly to cats?

No, that's a stubborn myth. They're irritating and can cause vomiting, but serious poisonings are very rare. It's still best to keep them out of reach.

My cat ate a poinsettia leaf. What should I do?

Don't panic: offer water, remove any leftover leaves and keep an eye on your cat. If vomiting or diarrhea lasts more than a day, or your cat seems lethargic, call your vet.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
