Why?
Shallots contain the same kinds of sulfur compounds as onion and garlic, which oxidize hemoglobin. Damaged red blood cells form Heinz bodies and are destroyed, which can cause hemolytic anemia. Raw, cooked, caramelized or dried, they stay toxic, and because they're usually finely minced, they're easy to miss in a dish.
How much?
No amount is safe. Shallots hide in vinaigrettes, butter sauces, bearnaise, marinades, pan sauces for meat and stir-fries.
The risks
- Hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells)
- Pale gums, weakness, rapid breathing
- Dark or reddish urine
- Vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite
- Symptoms that can be delayed by several days
Your cat ate some: what now?
Call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms: anemia can take several days to appear. Don't make your cat vomit yourself. Note what it ate, how much and when.
Better options
If you want to share your steak or fish, set your cat's portion aside before adding any sauce. A piece of plain cooked meat is plenty.
Common questions
My cat licked salad dressing with shallots, is it serious?
A few licks probably contain little shallot, but no safe dose is known. Call your vet and describe the amount: they'll tell you whether to come in or keep watch.
Can cats eat steak with a shallot sauce?
No. The sauce carries the toxic compounds, plus butter and salt. Give your cat a plain piece of cooked steak before any sauce goes on.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
