Grains and starches

Can cats eat oatmeal?

verdictA little

A little. A teaspoon of plain oatmeal cooked in water is fine for your cat, but it isn't something they need.

Why?

Oats aren't toxic, and they sometimes show up in cat food as a source of fiber. But they're a starchy grain, which an obligate carnivore doesn't need. Raw oats soak up liquid and are harder to digest, so cooked is better.

How much?

A teaspoon of oatmeal cooked in water, with no milk, sugar or salt, cooled down, once in a while. No oatmeal topped with raisins, chocolate chips or honey.

The risks

  • Raw oats: bloating, harder to digest
  • Oatmeal made with milk: diarrhea
  • Raisins or chocolate added: toxic
  • Empty calories if given often

Your cat ate some: what now?

A little plain oatmeal is nothing to worry about. Watch for bloating, vomiting or diarrhea over 24 to 48 hours. If your cat ate oatmeal or granola with raisins or chocolate, call your vet.

Better options

If you're looking for fiber to help digestion, a spoonful of plain cooked pumpkin is a better pick, and your vet can suggest a suitable food. As a reward, a small piece of cooked meat beats oatmeal every time.

Common questions

Can cats eat raw oats?

It's better to cook them. Raw oats swell with liquid in the stomach and are harder to digest; cooked in water and cooled, they go down more easily.

Can cats eat flavored instant oatmeal?

Avoid it. Flavored packets usually contain sugar, salt and flavorings, and some include raisins or chocolate. Plain oats cooked in water are the only version worth sharing.
