Can cats eat rice?

verdictYes

Yes. Plain, well-cooked white rice is easy to digest and can help in a pinch, but it gives your cat almost nothing.

Why?

Cats are obligate carnivores: they run on animal protein and fat and have no real need for carbohydrates. Cooked rice isn't toxic and is gentle on the gut, which is why it shows up in some cat foods and is sometimes used for mild tummy trouble. It never replaces meat, though.

How much?

One teaspoon to one tablespoon of well-cooked white rice, boiled in unsalted water and mixed into their food, once in a while. No fried rice, buttered rice or rice in sauce.

The risks

  • Rice cooked with onion, garlic, soy sauce or broth
  • Raw or undercooked rice: hard to digest
  • Constipation or bloating if overdone
  • Empty calories and weight gain

Your cat ate some: what now?

A little plain rice isn't a problem. If your cat ate a seasoned rice dish, watch for vomiting and diarrhea over 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if symptoms appear or if the dish contained onion or garlic.

Better options

To treat your cat, focus on protein: plain cooked chicken, turkey or fish. For fiber, a spoonful of plain cooked pumpkin is another option.

Common questions

Is rice good for cats with diarrhea?

A little white rice with plain cooked chicken can help short term, but check with your vet first. If diarrhea lasts more than 24 to 48 hours, or your cat vomits, stops eating, seems lethargic or is a kitten, see a vet right away.

Can cats eat brown rice?

Yes, cooked and plain, but it has more fiber and is a bit harder to digest than white rice. Neither one is something your cat actually needs.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
