Why?
Melon isn't toxic and is mostly water, but it's sugary and gives your cat nothing essential. Too much can cause diarrhea. The rind is tough and indigestible, and its surface can carry bacteria.
How much?
Two or three small cubes of flesh once in a while is enough. Wash the melon before cutting it, remove the rind and seeds, and serve it plain, not wrapped in prosciutto.
The risks
- Diarrhea from too much melon
- Extra sugar for diabetic or overweight cats
- Indigestible rind, risk of blockage
- Melon with prosciutto: far too salty
Your cat ate some: what now?
A few cubes of melon are nothing to worry about. Watch your cat for diarrhea or vomiting over the next 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if your cat swallowed rind, ate a lot or if symptoms persist.
Better options
For hydration, wet food or a little water added to meals helps more than fruit. For pure enjoyment, a small piece of plain cooked chicken will be a hit.
Common questions
Why do cats love cantaloupe?
No one knows for sure. One popular theory is that some compounds in its smell resemble those found in meat. It isn't proven, but it would explain the begging.
Can cats eat honeydew?
Yes, the same rules apply: a few small cubes of flesh, no rind and no seeds, once in a while.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
