Why?
Bananas are full of sugar and starch, which an obligate carnivore doesn't need and handles poorly in quantity. A whole banana would cover a big share of a cat's daily calories. The peel is tough and fibrous, so it isn't digested and can upset the gut.
How much?
One thin slice, cut into small pieces, once in a while is enough. Serve it plain and peeled, never as banana bread or a sugary dessert.
The risks
- Diarrhea or constipation from too much banana
- Weight gain from sugar and starch
- Not suitable for diabetic cats
- Indigestible peel, risk of blockage
Your cat ate some: what now?
If your cat stole a bite of banana, don't worry: it isn't toxic. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea or constipation over the next 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if your cat swallowed peel, ate a whole banana or if symptoms persist.
Better options
A small piece of plain cooked chicken or fish suits your cat much better. If it's the soft texture they love, a teaspoon of plain cooked pumpkin works too.
Common questions
What about banana bread?
Skip it. It's loaded with sugar and butter, and some recipes add chocolate, raisins or nuts. A plain slice of banana is the only version to share.
Can kittens eat bananas?
It isn't toxic, but there's no benefit and a kitten's stomach is sensitive. Stick to kitten food and save the odd bite of fruit for adulthood.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
