Why?
A plain crepe is flour, eggs, milk and a bit of sugar and butter: not toxic, but useless for a carnivore. The milk and butter can upset a lactose-sensitive cat. The real danger is the filling: chocolate or chocolate spread, sugar-free jam, flambéed crepes, or batter flavored with rum or beer.
How much?
A small piece of plain crepe, without added sugar or filling, once in a while. Keep it to a bite, not a meal.
The risks
- Diarrhea or vomiting from the milk and butter
- Poisoning with a chocolate filling
- Alcohol in flambéed crepes or rum batter
- Xylitol in sugar-free fillings
- Weight gain if it becomes a habit
Your cat ate some: what now?
A bite of plain crepe is usually not a problem: watch your cat for 24 to 48 hours for vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy, and call your vet if they appear. If your cat ate a chocolate, Nutella or boozy crepe, call right away.
Better options
While you cook, give your cat a small piece of plain cooked egg or a cat treat instead.
Common questions
Can cats eat pancakes?
Plain pancakes are like crepes: a small bite isn't toxic, but they're useless for a cat. Skip the syrup, butter, chocolate chips and any sugar-free toppings.
Can cats eat Nutella crepes?
No. Nutella contains cocoa, which is toxic to cats. If your cat ate some, call your vet for advice.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
