Can cats eat cinnamon?

verdictA little

A little. A pinch of cinnamon isn't toxic to cats, but the powder irritates the mouth and airways, and cinnamon oil is dangerous.

Why?

Cinnamon isn't considered toxic to cats in small amounts. The powder can irritate the mouth, cause coughing and breathing trouble if inhaled, and large amounts can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Cinnamon essential oil is highly concentrated and irritating, and a cat's liver handles these kinds of compounds poorly.

How much?

There's no reason to give it. A pinch that lands in the bowl is no big deal, but keep the jar put away and don't diffuse cinnamon oil at home.

The risks

  • Mouth and lip irritation
  • Coughing or sneezing if the powder is inhaled
  • Vomiting and diarrhea in large amounts
  • Essential oil: irritation and poisoning

Your cat ate some: what now?

A pinch or a bite of cinnamon pastry usually isn't serious: watch for vomiting, diarrhea or coughing for 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if your cat swallowed a spoonful of powder, licked essential oil, or has trouble breathing.

Better options

For a treat, a cat treat or a small piece of plain cooked chicken is far better. If your cat loves scents, catnip is a much bigger hit.

Common questions

Can cats eat cinnamon rolls?

Cinnamon isn't the main problem: the sugar, butter and icing are, and some recipes include raisins or nutmeg. Don't share them; a crumb by accident is fine.

Is a cinnamon candle or diffuser safe for cats?

Essential oil diffusers are best avoided with cats, since they inhale the droplets and can lick them off their fur. An occasional scented candle in a ventilated room is lower risk, but keep it out of reach.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
