Snacks and sweets

Can cats eat cookies?

verdictNo

No. Cookies are full of sugar and fat, and many contain chocolate, raisins or xylitol, which can be dangerous for cats.

Why?

A cookie is mostly flour, sugar and butter, nothing a carnivore needs, and cats can't even taste sweetness. The real danger is in the extras: chocolate (theobromine), raisins, some nuts, or xylitol in sugar-free versions. Even a plain cookie can upset a cat's stomach.

How much?

No amount is recommended, even for plain cookies. Keep packages closed and out of reach, especially chocolate ones.

The risks

  • Chocolate poisoning with chocolate or chocolate chip cookies
  • Raisins: kidney damage seen in dogs, avoided as a precaution
  • Vomiting and diarrhea from sugar and fat
  • Xylitol in sugar-free cookies
  • Weight gain if it becomes a habit

Your cat ate some: what now?

If the cookie contained chocolate, raisins or xylitol, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms. Keep the packaging for the ingredient list, and don't try to make your cat vomit. For a small bite of plain cookie, just watch your cat for 24 to 48 hours.

Better options

Crunchy cat treats are made for this. You can also offer a small piece of plain cooked chicken or turkey.

Common questions

My cat ate a chocolate chip cookie, what should I do?

Call your vet or an animal poison control center with the packaging: they'll assess the risk based on how much chocolate was eaten and your cat's weight. Don't wait for symptoms, which can take hours to show.

Can cats eat crackers?

Not really. Crackers are salty, sometimes seasoned with onion or garlic, and offer nothing a cat needs. A crumb won't hurt, but don't make them a treat.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
