Can cats eat cashews?

verdictNo

No. Cashews aren't toxic, but they're fatty and usually salted or seasoned, so they're not a snack for your cat.

Why?

Cashews aren't among the foods known to be toxic to cats, but they're still rich in fat: in larger amounts, that means vomiting, diarrhea and possibly pancreatitis. They're almost always sold roasted and salted, and in snack mixes they may be flavored with honey, spices or garlic. They offer nothing a cat can't get better from meat.

How much?

No cashews for your cat, even plain. Keep trail mix and snack mixes out of reach, since they often contain other nuts and sometimes raisins.

The risks

  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Too much salt: intense thirst
  • Seasonings with garlic, onion or chili
  • Possible pancreatitis after a large amount
  • Choking on a whole cashew

Your cat ate some: what now?

A stolen cashew usually isn't serious: watch for vomiting and diarrhea over 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if your cat ate a good amount, if the cashews were seasoned with garlic or onion, or if the mix contained raisins or chocolate.

Better options

For snacking, cat treats are made for exactly that. A small piece of plain cooked chicken will make your cat just as happy.

Common questions

Can cats eat unsalted cashews?

They're less of a problem, but still fatty and of no use to a cat. A cashew dropped on the floor isn't a big deal; it just isn't a treat to offer.

Can cats have cashew milk or cashew butter?

Cashew milk isn't toxic but is often sweetened and pointless for a cat, and cashew butter is concentrated fat. Skip both, and check the label for sweeteners if your cat got into some.
