Why?
The sweet almonds sold in stores aren't considered toxic, but they're high in fat: in larger amounts, that means vomiting, diarrhea and possibly pancreatitis. A whole almond is hard and big enough to get stuck in a cat's throat or gut. Bitter almonds, rarely sold, also contain cyanogenic compounds.
How much?
No almonds for your cat, whether raw, roasted, salted or coated. Watch out for baked goods and trail mixes too.
The risks
- Vomiting, diarrhea
- Choking on a whole almond
- Intestinal blockage
- Salted or flavored almonds: salt, garlic, spices
- Possible pancreatitis after a large amount
Your cat ate some: what now?
One swallowed almond usually isn't serious: watch for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and a painful belly over 24 to 48 hours. Call your vet if your cat is coughing, struggling to breathe or swallow, vomiting repeatedly or not passing stool.
Better options
For a crunchy treat, cat treats are made for them. A piece of plain cooked chicken is a great reward too.
Common questions
Can cats drink almond milk?
It isn't toxic, but it isn't suitable either: it's often sweetened or flavored and offers nothing nutritionally for a cat. Lactose-free milk made for cats is a better treat.
Can cats eat almond butter?
It's best not to. It's concentrated almond fat, and like other nut butters, some versions contain added salt, sugar or even xylitol. Check the label if your cat licked some.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
