Why?
Applesauce is cooked, peeled apple without seeds, and it isn't toxic to cats. But it's naturally sweet, and regular versions have added sugar, which is useless for a carnivore that can't taste it. Avoid light versions with sweeteners and fruit blends that include grapes or citrus. It gives your cat almost nothing nutritionally.
How much?
A teaspoon at most, plain and unsweetened, only occasionally. Not a daily dessert.
The risks
- Diarrhea if too much is eaten
- Useless sugar in sweetened applesauce
- Possible sweeteners in light versions
- Weight gain if it becomes a habit
Your cat ate some: what now?
A small amount is usually not a problem. Watch your cat for 24 to 48 hours for vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy, and call your vet if they appear, if your cat ate a large amount, or right away if the applesauce contained sweeteners or grapes.
Better options
For fruit, a few small pieces of fresh apple, peeled and seedless, work well. For digestion, a spoonful of plain cooked pumpkin is a better fit.
Common questions
Can cats eat cinnamon applesauce?
It's better to stick to plain. Flavored applesauce is usually sweetened too, and spices have no place in a cat's diet.
Is unsweetened applesauce OK for cats?
Yes, in small amounts: it's the only kind worth considering. Check the label anyway and pick one with only fruit, no sweeteners.
