Why?
Alcohol enters the bloodstream very quickly, and for an animal that weighs a few pounds, a small amount is already a large dose. It depresses the nervous system, drops body temperature, blood sugar and blood pressure, and can slow breathing to the point of coma. Watch out for hidden sources too: boozy desserts, cream liqueurs that attract cats, and raw bread dough, which produces alcohol as it ferments.
How much?
No amount is safe. Don't leave glasses, bottles or open cans within reach, especially during parties.
The risks
- Wobbly walking and disorientation
- Vomiting
- Drop in body temperature and blood sugar
- Slowed breathing, loss of consciousness
- Coma, or even death with a large dose
Your cat ate some: what now?
Call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms: alcohol poisoning can get worse quickly. Note what your cat drank and how much, and keep the bottle. Don't try to make your cat vomit.
Better options
During parties, keep fresh water available and, to include your cat, hide a cat treat in a puzzle feeder.
Common questions
Can cats drink beer?
No. Beer contains alcohol, and for a cat even a few laps can be too much. Keep glasses and cans out of reach.
My cat licked a drop of wine, what should I do?
A single drop licked off a finger usually won't cause serious poisoning, but more than that can quickly become dangerous. Call your vet for advice and watch your cat's balance, breathing and alertness.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
