Can cats drink coffee?

verdictNo

No. Coffee contains caffeine, which is toxic to cats: even a small amount can make them restless, speed up their heart and cause tremors.

Why?

Caffeine is a stimulant from the same family as the theobromine in chocolate, and cats are very sensitive to it. It speeds up the heart, overstimulates the nervous system and can cause vomiting, tremors or even seizures. Grounds, ground coffee, beans and pods are far more concentrated than a cup, so they're the most dangerous. Coffee with milk adds lactose too.

How much?

No amount is safe. Don't leave cups unattended, and keep pods, beans, grounds and used filters out of reach, trash can included.

The risks

  • Restlessness, hyperactivity, panting
  • Racing or irregular heartbeat
  • Vomiting
  • Tremors and seizures
  • Higher danger with grounds, beans or a coffee pod

Your cat ate some: what now?

If your cat drank more than a few drops, or ate grounds, ground coffee, beans or a pod, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms. Keep the packaging and don't try to make your cat vomit. For a single lick from your cup, watch your cat closely for 24 hours.

Better options

The only drink your cat needs is fresh water. A water fountain can encourage it to drink more.

Common questions

Can cats drink decaf coffee?

No. Decaf still contains a little caffeine, and often milk or sugar. It's less risky than regular coffee, but it's not a drink for cats.

My cat ate coffee grounds, what should I do?

Call your vet or an animal poison control center right away. Grounds are much more concentrated than brewed coffee, so even a small amount can be serious for a cat.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
