Can cats eat salmon?

verdictYes

Yes. Cooked, boneless, unseasoned salmon is a good source of protein and omega-3s for your cat.

Why?

Salmon provides quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for skin and coat. It's also an oily fish: too much can cause diarrhea, and it doesn't replace a complete meal. Raw salmon can carry parasites and bacteria, and smoked salmon is far too salty.

How much?

A bite or two, once or twice a week at most. Steam, bake or poach it with no salt, butter, lemon or sauce, and carefully remove every bone.

The risks

  • Bones that can get stuck in the throat
  • Diarrhea if the portion is too big
  • Raw salmon: parasites and bacteria
  • Smoked or cured salmon, far too salty
  • Butter, cream or garlic sauces

Your cat ate some: what now?

A little plain cooked salmon is no problem. If your cat ate a large portion, salmon in sauce or pieces with bones, watch for 24 to 48 hours and call your vet for repeated vomiting, diarrhea, drooling or refusing food.

Better options

For variety, half a sardine packed in water with no added salt or a bit of plain cooked chicken goes over just as well.

Common questions

Can cats eat raw salmon?

It's best not to. Raw salmon can carry parasites and bacteria, and freezing doesn't solve everything. Cooked is much safer.

Can cats eat canned salmon?

Yes, in small amounts, if it's packed in water with no added salt. Drain it, mash any soft canned bones, and skip seasoned versions.
