Can cats eat popcorn?

verdictA little

A little. One or two pieces of plain, air-popped popcorn won't hurt your cat, but salted, buttered or caramel popcorn should be avoided.

Why?

Popcorn is just puffed corn, and plain it isn't toxic to cats. The trouble is what goes on top: salt, butter, caramel and flavorings. Unpopped kernels and hulls can also get stuck in the teeth or throat. Like corn, it gives a carnivore almost nothing.

How much?

One or two fully popped, plain pieces made without oil, butter or salt, only once in a while. Always remove unpopped kernels.

The risks

  • Choking on an unpopped kernel or a stuck hull
  • Vomiting or diarrhea from butter and oil
  • Too much salt with salted popcorn
  • Useless sugar in caramel or kettle corn

Your cat ate some: what now?

A few pieces, even salted or sweet ones, are usually not a problem. Watch your cat for 24 to 48 hours for vomiting, diarrhea, coughing or trouble swallowing, and call your vet if these signs appear or if a big part of the bowl is gone.

Better options

If it's the game your cat loves, toss a paper ball or a cat treat instead. For a snack, a small piece of plain cooked chicken is a much better choice.

Common questions

Can cats eat buttered popcorn?

It's best not to. Butter and salt can upset your cat's stomach, and movie theater or microwave popcorn is usually loaded with both.

Can cats eat popcorn kernels?

No. Unpopped kernels are hard, can cause choking and can't really be digested. Only fully popped, plain pieces, and just a couple.
