Can cats eat omelette?

verdictYes

Yes. A plain, fully cooked omelette with no salt, butter or fillings is a good source of protein for your cat, in small amounts.

Why?

Cooked egg provides quality protein and amino acids cats can use, and cooking removes the salmonella risk and the effect of raw egg white on biotin. The problem is what goes in it: onion, chives, garlic, herbs, cheese, ham or bacon. Added butter, oil and salt don't suit your cat either.

How much?

A few small pieces of plain omelette, once or twice a week at most, as a treat. Cook it in a nonstick pan with no fat or just a drop of oil, and let it cool.

The risks

  • Stomach upset if the omelette is greasy
  • Anemia if it contains onion, chives or garlic
  • Weight gain if it replaces meals
  • Runny egg: salmonella risk

Your cat ate some: what now?

A piece of plain omelette is no problem at all. If your cat ate an omelette with onion, chives or garlic, call your vet; for one with cheese or ham, watch for vomiting and diarrhea for 24 to 48 hours.

Better options

A mashed hard-boiled egg with no salt is even easier. A little plain cooked chicken is always a safe bet too.

Common questions

Can cats eat scrambled eggs?

Yes, scrambled eggs are fine if they're cooked through and made without salt, butter, milk or cheese. Offer a spoonful as an occasional treat.

Can cats eat a cheese omelette?

A small bite won't hurt, but cheese adds fat, salt and some lactose. Keep the omelette plain for your cat.
