Can cats eat duck?

verdictYes

Yes. Cooked duck with no skin, bones or seasoning is a treat your cat can enjoy in small amounts.

Why?

Duck is rich in protein and iron, and it's even used in some cat foods. Its skin and fat layer are very fatty, though, and can cause vomiting and diarrhea, or may contribute to pancreatitis in some cats. Rich preparations like confit, duck fat or foie gras are too fatty and salty for a cat.

How much?

A few small pieces of lean meat now and then, cooked through, with no skin, fat, bones or salt. Skip anything with orange glaze, hoisin or other sauces.

The risks

  • Skin and fat: vomiting, diarrhea, risk of pancreatitis
  • Cooked bones that splinter
  • Confit and foie gras, too fatty and salty
  • Sweet or salty sauces like hoisin or orange glaze
  • Raw or rare meat: Salmonella

Your cat ate some: what now?

A little plain cooked duck is no problem. If your cat ate skin, fat, a salty preparation or a bone, watch for 24 to 48 hours and call your vet for vomiting, diarrhea, refusing food or lethargy.

Better options

Plain cooked chicken, turkey and rabbit are leaner and just as popular.

Common questions

Can cats eat duck skin?

It's best not to. Duck skin is mostly fat, which can upset a cat's stomach, and it often carries salt and seasoning.

Is duck good for cats with allergies?

Duck is sometimes used as a less common protein in diets for sensitive cats. If you suspect a food allergy, talk to your vet before switching, since a proper elimination trial needs a strict plan.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
