Why?
Dates are extremely high in sugar, which your cat doesn't need and can't even taste. Their sticky texture is hard to chew, and the long, hard pit can cause choking or block the gut. They're also high in fiber, which can lead to diarrhea.
How much?
If you really want to share, a pea-sized piece, pitted, once in a while is enough. Skip stuffed or coated dates, and avoid them entirely if your cat is diabetic or overweight.
The risks
- Pit: choking or blockage
- Very sugary: weight gain, avoid with diabetes
- Diarrhea or bloating
- Stuffed dates: marzipan, nuts, chocolate
Your cat ate some: what now?
A bit of date isn't dangerous. Watch for vomiting or diarrhea over the next 24 to 48 hours. If your cat swallowed a pit, or is vomiting, not eating or seems to have belly pain, call your vet.
Better options
For a treat that suits your cat, a small piece of plain cooked turkey or chicken is a much better fit. If you want fruit, one or two blueberries carry far less sugar.
Common questions
My cat swallowed a date pit, is that serious?
The pit isn't toxic, but it's hard and can get stuck. Call your vet, especially if your cat vomits, refuses food or stops passing stools.
What about stuffed or chocolate-covered dates?
No: they're often filled with marzipan or nuts, or coated in chocolate, none of which suit a cat, and chocolate is toxic.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
