Can cats eat cream?

verdictNo

No. Cream is very high in fat and still contains lactose, so it's far more likely to upset your cat's stomach than to do them any good.

Why?

Heavy cream is at least 36 percent fat, making it one of the richest dairy products there is. A big dose of fat irritates the digestive system and may contribute to pancreatitis, while the lactose is poorly digested by most adult cats. The old image of the cat that got the cream comes from their love of fat, not from any need.

How much?

Skip it entirely, just like milk, and that includes cream sauces, which often contain onion, garlic, salt or cheese. Light cream and half-and-half are still fatty and full of lactose.

The risks

  • Diarrhea and bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Possible pancreatitis, especially after a large amount
  • Cream sauces with onion or garlic are toxic
  • Weight gain

Your cat ate some: what now?

A lick off a spoon isn't an emergency: watch for diarrhea or vomiting over the next 24 to 48 hours. If your cat ate a good amount or got into a sauce with onion or garlic, or seems lethargic, vomits repeatedly or has a painful belly, call your vet.

Better options

Lactose-free cat milk or a creamy lickable cat treat gives the same pleasure. A small piece of plain cooked chicken is always a safe bet.

Common questions

Can cats have whipped cream?

No. Whipped cream is heavy cream beaten with sugar, and the canned kind often adds stabilizers and flavorings: fat, lactose and sugar, with nothing useful for your cat.

Why do cats love cream so much?

Cats are drawn to fat, an important energy source in a carnivore's diet. They can't even taste sweetness, but the smell and texture of dairy fat appeal to them. That doesn't make it good for them.
