Can cats eat chickpeas?

verdictA little

A little. One or two well-cooked plain chickpeas aren't dangerous for your cat, but hummus is a different story.

Why?

Like lentils, chickpeas are starchy, fiber-rich legumes that ferment in the gut and easily cause gas. Raw or undercooked, they're hard to digest and contain irritating compounds that cooking neutralizes. Whole, they can also be gulped down without chewing by an eager cat.

How much?

One or two well-cooked chickpeas, unsalted and mashed, once in a while. Rinse canned ones well, and skip roasted, salted or spiced chickpeas.

The risks

  • Gas and bloating
  • Raw or undercooked chickpeas are hard to digest
  • Hummus: garlic, lemon, salt
  • Roasted chickpeas: salt, spices, hard to chew

Your cat ate some: what now?

One plain chickpea is nothing to worry about. If your cat ate hummus, call your vet to check whether the amount of garlic is a concern, since its effects can take several days to appear. For other seasoned chickpea dishes, watch for vomiting or diarrhea over 24 to 48 hours.

Better options

If you want to share a vegetable, plain cooked peas or green beans go down more easily. For a real treat, go with cooked meat or fish.

Common questions

Can cats eat hummus?

No. Hummus contains garlic, lemon juice, salt and fatty tahini. Garlic is toxic to cats, even in small amounts.

Can cats eat roasted chickpeas?

It's better not to. They're usually salted or spiced, sometimes with garlic powder, and they're hard enough to be a choking risk.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a veterinarian. If your cat has swallowed something toxic, call your vet or an animal poison control center right away, without waiting for symptoms.
