Can cats eat beef?

verdictYes

Yes. Plain, well-cooked beef is a great source of protein for your cat in small amounts.

Why?

Beef provides quality protein, iron, zinc and B vitamins, all things a carnivore appreciates. Cooked plain, it makes an excellent treat, especially lean cuts, since very fatty pieces can upset digestion. Raw ground beef can carry bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, plus parasites such as Toxoplasma.

How much?

A few small cubes or about a tablespoon of ground beef now and then. Cook it through, with no oil, salt, garlic or onion. No leftovers from saucy dishes like chili, meatloaf or spaghetti sauce: they almost always contain onion.

The risks

  • Raw meat: E. coli, Salmonella, Toxoplasma
  • Fatty cuts: vomiting or diarrhea
  • Sauces or seasoning with onion, garlic or wine
  • Cooked bones that splinter, or big bones that crack teeth
  • Nutritional gaps if beef replaces complete cat food

Your cat ate some: what now?

A bit of plain beef, even a little fatty, usually causes no trouble. If your cat ate a saucy dish or raw meat, watch for vomiting, diarrhea, unusual tiredness or loss of appetite over 24 to 48 hours and call your vet if you see them. If they ate a lot of onion or garlic sauce, call right away.

Better options

Plain cooked chicken, turkey or lean lamb make great treats too. For meals, stick with complete cat food.

Common questions

Can cats eat raw ground beef?

It's safer cooked. Raw ground beef can carry E. coli, Salmonella and parasites, and handling it is a risk for you too. A stolen bite isn't an emergency, but don't make it a habit.

Can cats eat steak?

Yes, a few small pieces of plain cooked steak with the fat trimmed off. Skip anything with garlic butter, pepper sauce or a marinade.
